Maguire (Patrick ) is born in County Monaghan, Ireland.
December 5, 1838
Patrick Maguire emigrates with his family to Prince Edward Island, Canada, then, at age 14, walks to Boston in 1852. He becomes a tailor, then owner of a clothing factory, and is nicknamed Pea Jacket for the short, sailor’s jacket he favors. Maguire becomes a ward boss from the South End and Lower Roxbury, a member of the so-called Strategy Board, which meets in Room 8 at the Quincy House, is elected to the Board of Aldermen in 1875,* and chairman of the Democratic City Committee in 1878, and goes on to be called the “Boss of bosses,” and the only city-wide boss that Boston has ever had. He serves on the Governor’s Council, as Park Commissioner, and founds The Republic newspaper in 1882.* Maguire dies in 1896.
